A summer spent at Camp Avoda, the best all-boys Jewish Summer Camp, is packed with nonstop fun and adventure. Every day is filled with activities taking place in every nook and cranny of our campus. These things, however, are just some of the “must dos” throughout your time at Avoda
1. Become a Bunk 1 Alumni
Complete a summer in Bunk 1 as a camper or a counselor, or earn honorary membership by a vote from current Bunk 1 members. Once inducted, you’ll become an honorary “Gink Gonker” and can proudly belt out the “Gink Gonkers” alma mater. It’s a badge of honor that will stay with you forever. We’re Number 1!
2. Win the July 4th Egg Toss
Show off your hand-eye coordination and teamwork! Each division—Freshman, Sophomore, Junior, Senior, CITs, and Staff—competes for the ultimate prize: bragging rights and a celebratory trip to Dairy Queen. It’s a time-honored tradition that’s as messy as it is fun!
3. Go on the Sophomore Overnight
This one-night camping trip is a rite of passage. Bond with your fellow campers while white-water rafting, cooking dinner over an open fire, and of course, making s’mores. It’s a legendary night of adventure and friendship you’ll never forget.
4. Hit a Bunk-O
Step up to the plate, swing hard, and aim for the legendary Bunks 7, 8, or 9. Hitting a Bunk-O is no easy feat, but it’s an iconic achievement. Run the bases with pride, break the camp record, and leave your mark on Avoda history. Graduate and hit a Rec-O too! Beach-O? Lake-O? Sky’s the limit!
5. Win the Triple Crown
Be part of the rare team that wins Color War, Desert War, and League all in one summer. It’s an accomplishment few achieve, but those who do get high fives within in the Avoda community for life.
6. Eat the Gross Sandwich in the Amazing Race
Not for the faint of heart! During the all-camp Amazing Race relay, one “lucky” camper takes on the ultimate challenge: eating the infamous “Gross Sandwich.” It’s a concoction of unthinkable ingredients (think PB&J with tuna and hot sauce). If you’re chosen, wear it as a badge of honor—your team is counting on you!
7. Water Ski on One Ski
Master the waterfront’s ultimate challenge: water skiing on one ski. While anyone can learn to ski, only the most determined Avodians conquer the one-ski ride. Are you up for it?
8. Bike Around the Lake
Join Ken and Jill for a 7.5-mile bike ride around the scenic Lake Tispaquin. It’s a Shabbat Choice Activity that combines exercise, camaraderie, and a rarely seen view of Lake Tispaquin.
9. Play Fuzzy Bubba on Stage in the Rec Hall
Step into the spotlight during the talent show with a hilarious game of Fuzzy Bubba. Stuff as many marshmallows as possible into your mouth and try to say “Fuzzy Bubba.” We guarantee participants and audience members can’t make it to the final round without laughing.
10. Become a Bunk 14 Alumni
Finish your camper journey with a summer in Bunk 14 or earn honorary membership by a vote from Bunk 14 members. Proudly introduce yourself as a “Bunk 14er” for life and sing the alma mater loud and proud: “From the halls of Camp Avoda to the shores of Tispaquin…” Not to mention all of the other responsibilities and privileges that come with being a 14er.
11. Do a Rock Swim
Prove your swimming skills with this epic challenge: swim to “The Rock” across the lake, accompanied by a patrol boat for safety of course. It’s the ultimate test of endurance and strength.
12. Throw a Chip in the July 4th Bonfire for Your Bunk
Represent your bunk in front of the entire camp by throwing a wood chip into the massive July 4th bonfire on the beach. Share what you love most about Avoda and your wish for the summer. It’s a deeply meaningful moment that earns the attention of the whole camp.
13. Become a Color War Staff Member
The staff’s top-secret deliberations determine who makes the cut for this prestigious role. Whether you’re a Captain, Aide, Lieutenant, or General, your name will go down in Avoda history. It’s the ultimate honor for anyone passionate about Avoda Color War.
14. Do a Path Walk
As a Color War Captain, Aide, Lieutenant, or General, you’ll be introduced to your team in front of the entire camp during an epic walk down PGD Path. Build excitement, jump into your team’s huddle, and rally your team as you reveal your leadership role in this unforgettable moment.
15. Be a Head Judge for Color War
Reserved for senior staff members, this role carries the weight of declaring the final Color War winners. Head Judges are always observing and deliberating on team activities throughout the week of Color War. Stay on staff long enough and you may be lucky enough to get the title of Head Judge, and give away the legendary t shirt that comes with it.
Completing these 15 iconic tasks will ensure your time at Camp Avoda is nothing short of extraordinary. While these are some of the standout traditions, they’re just the tip of the iceberg.
